ABOUT THIS GROUND

The same Delta ground, three years earlier and one programme back: roll 385, frames 031–043, flown 15 November 1982 under NHAP81 rather than NHAP02. Two programmes over one place is a rare case in this collection, and the two flights can be read against each other. The ponds sit on the same grid as the row crops around them, banked and flooded, and the film separates them without ambiguity — the water absorbs the near-infrared and reads black, the crops and levees read red.

Pines on a small island in the pond at Kenrokuen, one of Japan's great strolling gardens, in Kanazawa, mirrored in still water under an orange sky, photographed in near-infrared light. The pines are pruned and propped over the water, and their needles return this light strongly while the pond absorbs it, which is why the trees stand so far above their own reflection.
